Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

It's been a rough start for our outstanding baseball program and while there is too much talent, expertise and flat-out hard work invested for the Commodores to stay down for very long, it should serve as a reminder to all of us that winning is never automatic and that sometimes there is a fine line between victory and defeat. There has never been a top collegiate program anywhere - any sport - that hasn't experienced the pains of rebuilding at some point.

Our women's golf team is rated in the nation's top 10 and one of its top performers is junior Lauren Stratton, who was rated as the SEC's No. 1 player heading into this spring. Stratton was in contention to win the recent LSU Invitational before ballooning to an 86 on the final day. Afterward it was learned she played that round battling a kidney stone that was surgically removed this week. There is an interesting feature on this web page, the rest of the story as Paul Harvey used to say.

Bowling star Brittni Hamilton was just named the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat-Chronicle's Amateur Athlete of the Year. It's considered a major award in the city, presented for over 60 years. She will be honored in May with Giants quarterback Eli Manning as the featured banquet speaker.
