NASHVILLE --- Vanderbilt recorded a season high 21 hits in a 17-3 rout of Xavier Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Music City Classic.
True freshman catcher Curt Casali led the way with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBI in his first collegiate start.
"I am just glad I got the opportunity to play and hopefully today people saw what I can do," said Casali.
Junior Nick Christiani nearly went the distance before tiring in the ninth. He threw a career high 8.1 innings with a career high 12 strikeouts. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with just one walk in his finest start as a Commodore.
Redshirt freshman Mark Lamm came on with runners at first and third in the ninth and got out of the situation with a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
VU scored three runs in the first, two in the third and eight more in the fourth to take a 13-0 lead.
Dan Hayden's two-run homer in the fifth put the Muskeeters on the board, but the Commodores came right back with two runs in the bottom half to make it 15-2. They added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings, before Xavier closed out the scoring in the top of the eighth.
Nashville native Brian Harris had a career high three hits and three RBI with Alex Feinberg and David Macias also recording three-hit days.
Jonathan White hit the team's first homer at home and finished 2-for-3 with four runs scored. Ryan Flaherty also had two hits to round out the multi-hit contingent.
Iowa, Kansas and Vanderbilt finished with identical 2-1 records in the tournament. Hawkeye Wes Freie was named the Music City Classic MVP. Alex Feinberg, Shea Robin, David Macias and Mike Minor were the VU representatives on the team.
The Commodores will take tomorrow off before starting a stretch of five games in six days against Louisville on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Hawkins Field. The Cardinals are 4-2 on the year after going to the College World Series in 2007.
